What are interpretations ?

Image
Today,  year 5 had a great day identifying what interpretations are and how different stories in the bible are interpreted.  Before the lesson started the children tried to define the word ‘interpretation’. Then they looked at two different stories about the birth of Christ; one from Luke and one from Mathew. They then evaluated the differences in the two stories and how they may effect Christian’s today. One thing they all agreed on was that the birth of Jesus needed to happen in both stories and the other subtle differences don’t matter.  From there they looked at different illusions in pictures.  Everybody enjoyed the pictures and this helped them to really understand interpretations and that these are always personal and sometimes different opinions are necessary.

French: lesson 2: What is in your lunchbox?

Year 5 practised their song and their lunch vocabulary. They then looked at how to conjugate: manger and practised using Je mange with word choices from the vocabulary they have already learnt. They then drew items that they would have for lunch in a lunch box. They then asked their partner what was in his/her lunch box, listening carefully, they drew their partner's lunch choices in the other lunchbox.

Informal letters

Over the last two weeks the children have been learning how to write an informal letter as well as identifying the skills they needed to use such as modal verbs, contractions and informal language.  Te children then wrote an informal letter Gaia, a character in our book; Boy in the Tower.

Multiplying

Image
In maths this week the children have been using their timetables to multiply three and four digit numbers by a single digit as well as multiplying a two and three digit by a two digit number. The children have excelled in this and we have been really impressed with their confidence and ability to use their knowledge to solve problems.

Science - What is aerodynamics, and how can we use understanding of it to make our cars faster?

Image
Today was the day the children have been looking forward to - getting into their Formula 1 group and beginning their research into Aerodynamics of a car.  Working in teams, the children used a range of secondary sources to explore what aerodynamics actually is, and how we can apply this knowledge to make our car design better.  Children looked at streamlining, wings, spoilers, tyre warming, air flow and inspiration from nature - as well as looking at the newest, and most aerodynamic car to date - the LightYear 0, learning that a teardrop is actually the most aerodynamic shape, rather than the classic 'wedge' of the F1 cars. The children will be working on this research until Christmas, when they will present these, as part of their final presentation, and as part of their table display on race day.

Ordnance Survey Symbols

Enthusiastically, the children used Ordnance Survey Maps to locate symbols and identify their meanings. They used the key to support themselves as well as the sub headings.
