Keeping Safe

Image
We finished our topic of ‘Keeping Safe’ by looking at the dangers around our local area and understanding how making the correct decisions and having the courage to stand up to our friends is really important. The children also discussed the horrendous accident in Solihull last weekend as 4 children died playing on a lake. The children talked about their different experiences in the snow, ice skating, tobogganing and walking near water with such confidence but they also knew that there are dangers as well. They discussed what they could do to keep themselves and their friends/family safe.

The Birth of Jesus

Reverend Amanda and Reverend Dion came into school today and talked to the children about celebrating Christmas. They asked the children to think about others and not just focus on the presents. She then set a challenge to the teachers to build a christingle blindfolded. The children really enjoyed taking part in this.  Today, Reverend Dion came to visit Priory Class and reminded us about the two different stories in the bible about the birth of Jesus.  Two of the children read the passages and then the children discussed what angels look like as well as the meaning of ‘the line of David’.  The children were then given time to answer questions.

Keeping Safe

Understanding how to Keep safe is a vital part of our PSHE programme and the children are aware of some of the dangers outside of school. Today, the discussed the different warning signs they see either outside, in their community or at school. They were asked to think of a place where they visit or play and make a warning sign of their choice.

Assessment

How has the economy in Cowes changed over time? There were some great discussions in year 5 concerning the different jobs in Cowes over the years. Since J.S. Whites folded the economy of Cowes has changed considerably. Some children think the increase in population has brought a greater demand for more housing and shops, thus, there are more builders and shops in Cowes. Some, though that we have lost some of our skills in manufacturing as we no longer build seaplanes and other large boats as they are often made in other countries as it is cheaper.

French: lesson 5: translation work

Year 5 practised their Petit dejeuner song and the lunch and breakfast vocabulary. They spent some time translating French breakfast statements into English with their partners and then translated a few in their books.

French: lesson 4: reading with understanding

Today year 5 practised their song and listened to a video about a family ordering breakfast in France. After listening to the video and practising breakfast vocabulary, they then had a go at reading and looking for certain words to help them translate an English sentence, using a dictionary where necessary.
