F1 Challenge Race Day

Image
It's lights out, away we go! What a great day of racing, presenting and teamwork on Tuesday, as we reached the pinnacle of the Year 5 F1 project. The children have worked so hard over the last 9 weeks; designing and manufacturing their racing cars, researching aerodynamics, building a portfolio of learning and writing speeches to present their designs. Today was the chance to show all of these things off. The teams did this brilliantly - wowing the judges with their knowledge and understanding across a range of STEM disciplines. The judging panel were made up from engineers from GKN, local business owners and school governors, who all said what a pleasure it was witness the children's enthusiasm and excitement. They were impressed by the skills on show, and by the children's ability to explain the tricky concepts involved. A huge thank you to Isabella, Josh and Noah from GKN, and to Tracy and Doug for their help on the day, as well as to all of the teachers and staff who as...

DT and Computing - F1 challenge introduction

Image
This week the children in year 5 were introduced to the F1 in schools challenge. They listened to a presentation from a group who were successful last year and two engineers from GKN. The children then decided which job roles they wanted to do and formed their teams for this year. We are looking forward to more Gurnard success this year.

Computing - Crumble Fairground (Priory Class)

Image
Today in Computing, it was Priory Class’s turn to use all of their learning from this term to make a model fairground ride using Crumble.  We designed and built our models from cardboard by first creating a diagram of the ride and a wiring diagram to show how the Crumble should be connected. We then carefully considered the code that was needed to make our rides work and wrote an algorithm to follow.  There were some fantastic designs on show, and the whole class worked brilliantly together to make their own amazing miniature funfair! Well done Year 5!
