World Book Day

What a great start to World Book Day, as everybody took part in an African drumming workshop with Andy. The children learnt how the instruments are made using natural resources from Africa.  This is a Djemba. Andy brought other instruments such as: Bongo, Gingin, Gumbe and Boogadoo Each child was given the opportunity to play the different instruments and at the end they used the different beats on the instruments and composed a song. It sounded great! The children were also taught how to say hello and goodbye: Jambe, as well as thank you: JerryJeff.  Afterwards, they followed a Puffin online story makers show. The question posed to us was, ‘Are there rainbows in space?’ Yes is the answer. What do you think they will look like? Some children thought they would look the same. Today, Priory Class took part in a virtual workshop with this fabulous author. Sarah introduced the children to her new book - The Night Animals. This intriguing book is about Nora and the ghost animals and how they Nora when things go wrong at home.  Once the virtual learning had finished the children designed their own ghost animals.

The Explorer

Over the past few weeks the children have loved reading our text driver ‘The Explorer’. A group of children crash land into the Amazon Jungle where they face many problems as they try to find their way home.  Firstly, they wrote a diary entry from the point of view of a character from the book. The children needed to use the correct features as well as the taught punctuation elements.  This week, the children have finished writing a fact file about the Amazon Jungle. The audience will be Year 3, who will be studying rainforests in the summer term. Using their research skills as well as colons, subordinating clauses and other taught elements the children created their best pieces of writing so far this year. Well done to you all.

Dialogue

The next few weeks, year 5 are using a Christmas advert as their text driver. They have begun to hone their dialogue skills this week using pictures. Mrs Gregory was really impressed with their work.

Informal letters

Over the last two weeks the children have been learning how to write an informal letter as well as identifying the skills they needed to use such as modal verbs, contractions and informal language.  Te children then wrote an informal letter Gaia, a character in our book; Boy in the Tower.

Contractions

This week the children have been learning how to use apostrophes correctly and apply them to their writing. To ensure they really understood they played contraction dominoes.
