Angles

Image
We have begun our journey about angles. The first few lessons have proved to be trickier than expected as  the children were learning how to use protractors to measure various types of angles. We took drastic measures and taped up our desks so the children could work together measuring angles on their desks. Next week, we start looking at angles on a straight line and in shapes.

Decimals

This week the children have recapped decimals up to three places. They are using the correct vocabulary and have learned to read and write them correctly as well as comparing decimals.  Great work everybody.

Maths challenge

Four children were chosen to represent Gurnard Primary at a maths challenge in Ryde. All of the children were a real credit to the school. All four enjoyed the tasks they were set and the timed challenges.

Fractions

Over the past two weeks the children have been on a fraction journey. With great skill the children have learnt how to divide to make fractions using visuals. Quickly they moved onto finding equivalent fractions and ordering fractions and finally this week they have really shown a great understanding and applied this to add fractions with different denominators.  Well done to everybody, perseverance and resilience were definitely needed.

Fraction fanatics!

This week, year 5 are adding fractions with different denominators, using our knowledge of equivalent fractions. They are working so hard to find the totals and even simplify our answers!

Fantastic fractions

This week, year five have dived into the world of fractions! We have learned how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number and vice versa. On Friday, we found some more practical ways of learning about fractions! It helped us to see which fractions have the same value despite having different numerators and denominators. We discovered that there are patterns that can instantly show us that a fraction is equivalent to 1/2.  Next week, we will learn about how we can compare and order a range of fractions.

Multiplying

Image
In maths this week the children have been using their timetables to multiply three and four digit numbers by a single digit as well as multiplying a two and three digit by a two digit number. The children have excelled in this and we have been really impressed with their confidence and ability to use their knowledge to solve problems.

Maths: multiplication

This week, year 5 have worked incredibly hard to master multiplication. They can now multiply 4-digit numbers by single digits. It was fascinating to then see the range of methods that we can use to solve 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problems.
