2022-24 Year 5 Blog

 Year 5 found out about how the French celebrate Easter. They then used a French/English dictionary to complete an Easter activity.

Year 5 revised all the work they have done on this topic, singing their song and revising vocabulary. They used  knowledge learnt to identify words in a poem, which they then annotated. They then used vocabulary learnt to create a recipe for the beach, filling in missing words.  

 We have begun our journey about angles. The first few lessons have proved to be trickier than expected as  the children were learning how to use protractors to measure various types of angles. We took drastic measures and taped up our desks so the children could work together measuring angles on their desks. Next week, we start looking at angles on a straight line and in shapes. 

 This week the children sat an assessment, where they had to answer the question, A friend wants to go on holiday to Scandinavia. What can you tell them about Scandinavia? Mrs Gregory was really proud of the children and all they had remembered from their last unit. Well done to you all. 

 During RE day, the children looked at the concept of divinity within the Christian faith. First, they looked at stories where Jesus carried out miracles and then they focussed on a specific one found in Mark chapter 2 vs 1 - 12, This is the story about Jesus healing a paralysed man.  The children discussed why Christians believe Jesus performed miracles as well as understanding why divinity is important to Christians.  Finally, the children linked their learning to their own beliefs and thoughts. They had to answer the question, ‘If you could pray for a miracle, what would it be?’  One child said world peace which I thought was incredible insight for a child so young. 

 To finish off our unit on Scandinavia, the children researched the indigenous people of Scandinavia and Russia. The Sami people are well known for herding and looking after their reindeer. The are semi-nomadic and move around with their reindeer. They have traditional clothes which they make by hand and these are individual to each person.  Have a look at the posters to find out more facts.
