Belonging

What a fantastic day learning about ‘belonging’. The children had to describe what belonging meant to them such as: family, school, clubs, teams and churches. They then identified how they show they belong; wearing uniforms, obeying rules, making a promise and wearing your hair in a certain way. From there they looked at a scenario about how we could help a child that is new to the school feel like they belong. Some really lovely discussions about this and children who are ‘newish’ to the school informed us how they were made to feel welcome and belong.

We then discussed if it is alright for people to not belong at times. The children then drew themselves and annotated how they make people belong.

Towards the end of the lesson, the children looked at how people belong to Islam. They watched a family celebrating Eid ul Adam and looked at the customs of the people and how these are different to ours. They also identified the importance of belonging for both Muslims and themselves.
