Comparing and Contrasting

 Today, the children compared two photos of Cowes. One was taken about 3 years ago and another from 1946. As a class we discussed some of the differences and then the class went and found others. 

Some of the discussions led us to explore how boats were used many years ago and how they are used today. They also looked at why there are more houses and less green land. 

At the end of the lesson they debated how the land might change in 50 years time.

 Today was the day the children have been looking forward to - getting into their Formula 1 group and beginning their research into Aerodynamics of a car.  Working in teams, the children used a range of secondary sources to explore what aerodynamics actually is, and how we can apply this knowledge to make our car design better.  Children looked at streamlining, wings, spoilers, tyre warming, air flow and inspiration from nature - as well as looking at the newest, and most aerodynamic car to date - the LightYear 0, learning that a teardrop is actually the most aerodynamic shape, rather than the classic 'wedge' of the F1 cars. The children will be working on this research until Christmas, when they will present these, as part of their final presentation, and as part of their table display on race day.

What happened after the Romans left Britain?

 This week, year five started their exciting new topic - Anglo-Saxons and Vikings! We started the lesson by making a prediction. What do you think happened after the Roman soldiers left Britain? Many children suggested that perhaps Britain became more peaceful… We quickly learned that this was not the case! The Middle Ages were filled with invasions, raids and battles. Britain was invaded by Picts, Scots, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Vikings, and Normans, too! We explored and colour-coded maps to show where some of these invaders came from, and studied a timeline that shows us when each group settled in Britain. Next time, we will explore the reasons behind the Anglo-Saxon invasions as we begin to piece together a picture of life at this time in Britain.
