MUSIC - research the traditions around Christmas Carols

Image
Year 5 have spent some time this afternoon researching the traditions behind Christmas Carols from around the World.  They discovered not all countries celebrate Christmas, in Israel Christmas Day is a normal working day, Silent Night was first written around 1818 by a Priest and was only translated to English in 1859, St Francis of Assisi first started the Nativity Play in 1223 and the earliest carol written was in 1410 - it was about Mary and a Joseph meeting different people in Bethlehem. Some very interesting facts!

Dialogue

The next few weeks, year 5 are using a Christmas advert as their text driver. They have begun to hone their dialogue skills this week using pictures. Mrs Gregory was really impressed with their work.

Using 4 grid refernces

This week, the children used their knowledge from last week to find symbols on an Ordnance Survey Map and identify the four grid reference they could be found. They had to follow roads, ferries as well as find their own houses. Well done year 5.

What are interpretations ?

Today,  year 5 had a great day identifying what interpretations are and how different stories in the bible are interpreted.  Before the lesson started the children tried to define the word ‘interpretation’. Then they looked at two different stories about the birth of Christ; one from Luke and one from Mathew. They then evaluated the differences in the two stories and how they may effect Christian’s today. One thing they all agreed on was that the birth of Jesus needed to happen in both stories and the other subtle differences don’t matter.  From there they looked at different illusions in pictures.  Everybody enjoyed the pictures and this helped them to really understand interpretations and that these are always personal and sometimes different opinions are necessary.

Year 5 have been learning about lunch and the associated vocabulary, today they learnt about  breakfast and how to order different breakfast items. They also learned that the French only eat  pastries on weekends! They labelled different types of breakfast items.

French: lesson 2: What is in your lunchbox?

Year 5 practised their song and their lunch vocabulary. They then looked at how to conjugate: manger and practised using Je mange with word choices from the vocabulary they have already learnt. They then drew items that they would have for lunch in a lunch box. They then asked their partner what was in his/her lunch box, listening carefully, they drew their partner's lunch choices in the other lunchbox.
