Islamic Workshop

 A very interesting lesson today with Hamza who gave the children a great insight into the beliefs and life of a Muslim. He brought in a Qur’an and prayer mats and scarves.  The children asked some very interesting questions and said it was very interesting.

What happened after the Romans left Britain?

 This week, year five started their exciting new topic - Anglo-Saxons and Vikings! We started the lesson by making a prediction. What do you think happened after the Roman soldiers left Britain? Many children suggested that perhaps Britain became more peaceful… We quickly learned that this was not the case! The Middle Ages were filled with invasions, raids and battles. Britain was invaded by Picts, Scots, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Vikings, and Normans, too! We explored and colour-coded maps to show where some of these invaders came from, and studied a timeline that shows us when each group settled in Britain. Next time, we will explore the reasons behind the Anglo-Saxon invasions as we begin to piece together a picture of life at this time in Britain.

I can explain why some parts of Scandinavia have 24 hours of darkness.

This week the children used globes to identify how the tilt of the Earth has an effect on the amount of light/ darkness in Northernmost part of Norway and Sweden which are north of the Arctic Circle. The polar nights lasts for about 28 days and the midnight sun can last for 50 days.  The Earth is on an axis - 23.5 degrees. Which means that when the Earth is tilted away from the sun, there are parts of the northernmost points that do not receive any sun for parts. When the Earth is tilted towards the sun the northernmost points will receive sun most of the time.  This was quite a tricky concept to learn so the children used torches and a globe to act out how the tilt has an effect of the Earth.
