Maths: multiplication

Image
This week, year 5 have worked incredibly hard to master multiplication. They can now multiply 4-digit numbers by single digits. It was fascinating to then see the range of methods that we can use to solve 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problems.

Contractions

This week the children have been learning how to use apostrophes correctly and apply them to their writing. To ensure they really understood they played contraction dominoes.

Science - How do forces act on a car?

Image
Today we began thinking about how forces can act on a car; to speed it up, and slow it down. We learnt about friction, identifying the several ways friction can act on a car, both on the tyres, the axel, and in the air. With a focus on ground friction today, the children looked at F1 racing, speaking with an engineer, and we found out that they actually warm the tyres up to between 80-100 degrees Celsius before putting them on the car, as warmer tyres grip the ground better.  We also had a go at interleaving book pages, testing the strength of friction.  We then zoomed in to a range of surfaces, learning that the reason that we experience friction, no matter how smooth the surface, is because every surface is made up of millions of tiny bumps and ridges, which rub over each other, creating friction. We learnt that we can reduce friction on the ground in three ways: - reducing the mass of our car - increasing the the thrust  - using a lubricant We are excited to expl...

MUSIC

Today Year 5 were listening to and responding to the music “Londonderry Air” and the lyrics of “Danny Boy”. They discovered this is the Anthem for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games. They also learnt that the music was written around the 1850’s while the lyrics were added in the early 20th Century.  For most of the children it made them feel calm and relaxed, proud, sad and thoughtful. Images in their mind were fields and flowers, birds and butterflies, mountains, castles, snow, war and poppies and many other images linked to nature. They then had time to practice some of the songs for the carol service.

Anti-Bullying Week

Image
Today, year 5 joined a live lesson on bullying.  Bullying is not a singular incident it must be repetitive.  The children were given different scenarios to decide which one was bullying and which wasn’t.  They then had to draw a hand and decide who they would reach out to if they faced bullying behaviour. This is what Priory Class made. Next, we looked at what it means to be an ally and how we can help others and give good advice. There were different groups of children explaining how they would support each other and how important it is to listen to each other.  We then looked at how we might answer the following text from a friend.  So what makes a good friend? These are our answers: Loyal, supportive, kind, have fun with them, they can help you when things are going wrong, somebody who does not judge you.  Finally, the class identified some of the different feelings we have and how we can deal with them either on our own or with a friend or trusted...

PE- Sportshall athletics

Learning objectives: I can begin to use my observations to improve my work. (EI2)  I can begin to record my own performances and begin to evaluate others using IPads. (EI3)  This week the children used the IPads to slow-mo their jumps. Mr Lines broke down the skills and the children practiced . Mr Lines then introduced the the use of the IPads to allow the pupils to slow-mo their own and peers standing long jump. The children filmed each other and then coached and evaluated each others' performances and jumps. Most children were fantastic in their understanding of how to enable their peers to improve their jumps, commenting useful things such as: "You need to tuck your knees. You should have your chest up when you jump." Well done Year 5

Identifying facts about Cowes.

Image
This week was an amazing lesson as the children identified the different types of employment in Cowes over time. They researched J.S. Whites as well as another company called Saunders-Roe. They looked at flying planes, warships, hovercrafts as well as the original floating bridge and how the name of Cowes has changed over the years.  One child brought in his library book and shared the information with us. Amazing discussions today.
